Cleaning a Cloth Shower Curtain

Before you begin washing the shower curtain, make sure to read the manufacturer’s care instructions. There are two ways to wash a cloth shower curtain.

Method 1

To wash the curtain in the washing machine, run a gentle cycle on a cold temperature setting. Add a cup of white vinegar along with a mild detergent. You can add a towel in the wash to cushion your shower curtain. If the care instructions permit it, you can place the curtain in the drier on a low heat setting.

Method 2

If your shower curtain is made of delicate or decorative material you might consider washing the curtain by hand. Use a mild detergent to avoid discoloration or damage. It is best to hang it out on the clothesline till it is completely dry. This will give the curtain a fresh fragrance and prevent it from developing a murky smell.

Cleaning a Plastic Shower Curtain

You needn’t toss your synthetic shower curtain once it starts to look dirty. You can easily wash it and avoid recurring expenses. Most synthetic shower curtains are antimicrobial, and don’t need to be washed with harsh cleaners. A mild detergent will do. There are two ways to go about the washing.

Method 1

Just like cloth shower curtains, plastic ones can be washed in the washing machine too. Plastic shower curtains are designed to be sturdy and withstand high temperatures. They can be washed in the washing machine on a low heat cycle.

You can also add some vinegar or baking soda along with detergent to your wash cycle. Make sure not to mix these two cleaning items, as they could cause a reaction to each other. Add a few towels to the wash to give the curtain a good scrub and also prevent the plastic from gathering in one spot.

Method 2

You can also clean a plastic shower curtain by hand. You will need a microfiber cloth and some baking soda. Dampen the cleaning cloth and sprinkle it with some baking soda. Go ahead and scrub the entire shower curtain, reapplying the baking soda as and when needed.

Now rinse the curtain with warm water and scrub any patches or stains that are still visible. Rinse the curtain once again till it is completely clean. The baking soda will not only clean the curtain but also give out a fresh scent in the bathroom.

Cleaning a Curtain Liner

If you use a shower curtain made of natural fibers like cotton or linen, then you will need a liner to keep it dry. Shower curtain liners are waterproof and made of synthetic materials like vinyl or EVA.

Liners can be washed in the same manner as plastic shower curtains. They can be washed in the washing machine to get a clean liner. You can also achieve a clean liner just as effectively by washing it by hand.  However, liners cannot be placed in the drier as the plastic can melt. Once the liner is clean hang it up to dry naturally.

Tips for Cleaning Plastic Curtains and Liners

These machine washing tips for synthetic shower curtains will keep them looking as good as new.

  • Use warm water to wash synthetic shower curtains and liners. Cold-water can harden the synthetic material and make it inflexible. This can cause the material to shred during the washing process. This is a sample text.
  • Do not use strong cleaners as they can wear out the synthetic material.
  • Fabric softeners should not be used with plastic shower curtains as they add a layer of film that collects grime.
  • The washing machine should be set to a normal cycle as heavy cycles can tear the plastic material.
  • Never put the curtain in the drier as the plastic can melt and create a mess.

Cleaning Shower Curtain Rings

When you take down the shower curtain and liner for a wash, it’s a good opportunity to clean the shower curtain rings. These rings are exposed to steam and dust daily and can get very dirty over time. It would be a shame to hang a clean shower curtain on unclean shower curtain rings.

To clean the rings, soak them in warm water in the sink.  Dilute the water with a few drops of all-purpose cleaner. Use a bristle brush to scrape off any lime scale or soap scum. Rinse the rings and lay them on a towel to dry.

Before replacing the rings, don’t forget to wipe down the shower curtain rod. Rods collect just as much dirt as anything else in the bathroom and require regular cleaning.

How Often Should You Clean?

Ideally, you should wash your shower curtains once every month to keep mildew at bay. Alternately you can fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spray the shower curtain. Leave it to sit for a few minutes and wipe clean. . This will go a long way toward keeping your shower curtain stain and mildew free. Now for your home, usually you can book cleaning services weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. If you are interested in discovering how much would be weekly maid services in the US, read our article.

Tips to Keep the Shower Curtain Clean

Now that you put all that hard work into cleaning the shower curtain, you wish there was a way to keep it that way. You can follow a few simple tricks to keep it clean longer.

  • Whenever you finish showering and exit the shower area, remember to close the curtain behind you. This will allow the curtain to air dry quickly and avoid any mildew from forming.
  • Hang the curtain rod at a height that does not allow the shower curtain to bunch up on the shower floor. If this is not possible then trim the bottom of the plastic curtain with a pair of scissors. There should be a gap between the curtain and the floor. This will prevent the bottom of the curtain from gathering all the soap scum.
  • When you get a new shower curtain or wash an existing one, make sure to add some vinegar to the final rinse. Hang out to dry on the curtain rod. The vinegar will prevent any nasty mildew or soap scum build-up.
